004 RADIOHEAD-the bends 1995
003 THE BEATLES-revolver 1966
The bends has an intelligence, a melody and intricacy which moved radiohead to a different place entirely, one that they'd make their own with ok computer more
Lennon later claimed he couldn't remember whether revolver came before or after sgt pepper, a fact not unconnected to the amount of LSD he was consuming at the time. Revolver is the point at which Lennon's acid-suffused imagination merged perfectly with McCartney's songcraft. The beatles weren't the first to sup at the psychedelic cup, but tomorrow never knows alone left their contemporaries gawping. From then on string quartets, backwards guitars, sitars and wide-eyed wonder became the order of UK pop.

002 RADIOHEAD-ok computer 1997
OK computer is like swimming in a chocolate river and being hit by a marshmallow boat.
Now radiohead felt secure enough to tinker, beatles-style, with their prototype. "Everyone said, you'll sell six or seven millions if you bring out the bends Pt 2" recalls guitarist Ed O'Brien, "and we're, like, we'll kick against that and do the opposite". The result: OK computer, an album ping-ponging from rhapsodic suites to avant garde rock and hymnal ballads. The cocktail of Open University experiment, Yorke's anguished lyrics and a cache of soaring melodies re-cast the band as a new pink floyd

Implausible as it might seem now, between 1990 and 1992, the dividing line between rock's underground and the mainstream was clearly marked. Sonic youth's signing to DGC/Geffen signalled a sea change and it was partly on their recommendation that the company came sniffing for nirvana. A huge songwritting and stylistic leap on from their bleach debut, nevermind 's not so secret weapon is its tunes: choruses that explode joyously out of the chainsaw-riffing din; bruised harmonies underpinning the racket. Toppling Mickael Jackson's dangerous off the billboard number 1 spot, nevermind dragged the US rock "underground", blinking, into the daylight.

001 NIRVANA-nevermind 1991

WE CAN DANCE LIKE IGGY POP
There's something oddly perfect about this LP. Fucking brilliant and best album of 2001
The first (and last?) glam rock concept album. Its charm lies in its rich instrumentation and a well-stocked arsenal of choruses
When guitarist Richey Edwards disappeared, the manics finally decided to carry on without him. Result: this nice album. Not a bad note on it.
A nervy eccentric and  some calmer moments as on homesick. This is slick stuff
where is britney?
